Body Recomposition and the ‘Toning Up’ Myth

Body recomposition is the process of losing fat and gaining muscle simultaneously. It's most achievable for beginners, those who have been inactive, or people returning to training after a break. As you become more advanced in your fitness journey, achieving both fat loss and muscle gain becomes more difficult. At that point, it's often better to focus on either bulking (building muscle) or cutting (losing fat).

The secret to body recomposition lies in balancing your energy intake and training. Your caloric intake controls your weight, while your training style influences how much muscle you gain or fat you lose. Without consuming enough calories, building significant muscle is unlikely. For women concerned about gaining size from lifting weights, it’s important to understand that noticeable bulk only comes from a long-term increase in calories and intense training, not just from weight lifting alone.

Muscle is denser than fat, so even if your weight stays the same, building muscle while losing fat will make you appear leaner. For instance, a woman who weighs 60kg and lifts weights for a year might still weigh 60kg, but will look more defined as she’s gained muscle and lost fat. This is often called "toning up" but really it's just a more defined muscle appearance resulting from fat loss. Therefore when somebody says that they want to ‘tone up’ they are really just saying they would like to lose fat while gaining muscle mass.
